Fishing tool
Fishing Reel Size Finder
Find a reel size that matches your species, technique, water and line — and understand what that number on the box does and does not tell you.
How this tool works
Your answers are matched against a rules table built from published tackle guidance and manufacturer specifications, then adjusted for water type, bait and experience level. A small set of hand-written rules covers the combinations where that arithmetic would give a poor answer.
The same rules produce every recommendation on this site, so a species page and this tool can never disagree. Nothing is generated on the fly by a language model, and nothing is influenced by a product. Read the methodology.
- A 3000 is not a 3000 everywhereReel classes are a manufacturer convention. The same number can hold noticeably different amounts of line between brands, and compact bodies sit between two classes.
- Check the capacity on the spoolThe figures printed on the reel are the ones that matter. Check them against the line you actually plan to use, especially with braid.
- Balance beats capacityA reel that makes the rod tip-heavy costs you more over a full day than one size class ever will.
