How this tool decides
- It starts with the fishEach species has a baseline rod, reel, line and hook. A pike starts heavier than a bluegill before you answer anything else.
- Technique, bait and water move itTechnique sets the rod length, reel type and usual line. The bait can change the hook. Salt water moves the hook, reel, rod power and line up.
- Experience changes how forgiving it isWhere no written rule applies, a beginner gets slightly heavier line, a softer rod action and monofilament instead of fluorocarbon, which is harder to tie. It never changes what the fish want.
- Common setups have written rulesFor pairings anglers fish all the time, such as bass on soft plastics or catfish on the bottom, a written rule gives the answer and the result is labeled "Well-established setup". Uncommon pairings are flagged instead.
- Fly fishing goes by line weightThe rod is chosen by line weight, the reel matches the rod, and the leader follows the fly rather than the fish.
What it does not know: your water's clarity, cover or current, the size of fish where you fish, local rules on tackle, or which brand you will buy.
- Ranges, not a shopping listEvery part comes back as a working range. Two anglers on the same lake can both be right with different tackle, and the result lists what would push you up or down a step.
- Easy to revisit or shareThe result URL keeps your choices, so you can bookmark or share the exact setup.
