Find a reel size that matches your species, technique, water and line — and understand what that number on the box does and does not tell you.

How this tool decides

Spinning reels start with the speciesFor spinning reels each species has a range of size classes. Technique and water then move it, and salt water moves it up two classes.
Baitcasting and conventional reels follow the lineFor those reels the tool works out the line first, including one you choose yourself, then picks the class whose stated line capacity overlaps it.
The range stays shortThe arithmetic never spans more than three neighboring classes. A written rule can set its own range for a common case, such as 4000 to 6000 for catfish.
One class down or upResults also show the next class down and up where the size ladder has one, and say when each is worth it: better balance in open water, or more line around structure and bigger fish.
Fly reels follow the rodFor fly fishing the reel is matched to the rod's line weight, not to line capacity.

What it does not know: which reel you are looking at: the tool does not compare drag, gear ratio or weight.

A 3000 is not a 3000 everywhereReel classes are a manufacturer convention, and the same number holds different amounts of line between brands. Go by the capacity printed on the spool, especially with braid.
Balance beats capacityA reel that makes the rod tip-heavy costs you more over a full day than one size class ever will.

KastKing — a guide to panfish fishing reels For crappie or bluegill a 500 size reel is just fine, with 2 to 6 lb line. It also warns that reel sizes are not standardized from maker to maker.
KastKing — finesse fishing for panfish Most anglers prefer a size 1000 reel with a finesse rod for panfish such as bluegill and crappie.
Rapala — how to choose a spinning reel A 500 to 1000 reel for small ponds, streams and creeks, and a 3500 to 5000 reel for bigger predators such as northern pike and salmon.
Daiwa — how to choose a spinning reel A manufacturer guide: sizes 1000 to 2500 for light freshwater fishing such as trout, and 3000 to 4000 for pike, where line capacity matters.
Shimano — Twin Power FE specifications Manufacturer example used to verify that adjacent reel labels can have different mono and braid capacities.
