What size hook for trout
Most trout fishing calls for a #12 to #6 hook. Single salmon eggs and small baits take a #12 or #10, worms take a #10 to #6, and small spinners and plugs carry #10 to #6 trebles. Going smaller is almost always the right adjustment on clear water.

Sizes are ranges because hook numbering is not standardized. Two hooks stamped the same size in different styles or from different brands can differ noticeably in gap.
The hook styles in that table
Octopus hook
Short shank, round bend and an up-turned eye for snelling. Compact and light for its gap.
Sizing: Short shanks make an octopus hook look smaller than a J hook of the same number even though the gap is comparable.
Watch out: The light wire that makes them good for live bait will open up on heavy drag or big fish.
J hook
The general-purpose bait hook shape most people picture when they think of a fish hook. Straight or slightly offset point, moderate shank.
Sizing: Printed sizes are consistent within a model family but not across brands. Compare gap width, not the number.
Watch out: Because the point faces the shank, a J hook set late tends to catch deep. If you are fishing bait on a rod holder, a circle hook is the better tool.
Jig hook (leadhead)
A hook moulded into a weighted head. Hook size and head weight are chosen separately.
Sizing: Package weight in ounces tells you sink rate, not hook size. A 1/16 oz crappie head and a 1/2 oz bass jig can carry very different hooks.
Watch out: Pick the head weight for the depth and current you are actually fishing, then check that the hook matches the bait.
Treble hook
Three points on a common shank, used as factory hardware on crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwater and spoons.
Sizing: Treble sizing runs on the same printed ladder but the practical range is much smaller. Most freshwater hard baits carry #8 to #2, with 1/0 to 4/0 on larger saltwater plugs.
Watch out: Changing treble size changes how a lure runs. Going up a size can kill the action of a small crankbait or sink a topwater.
Fly hook
Light-wire hooks in a wide range of bends, sold by size and pattern style rather than by fish.
Sizing: Fly hooks use the same numbered ladder but extend much further into small sizes than bait hooks do.
Watch out: Wire weight matters as much as size: a heavy streamer hook and a dry-fly hook in the same size behave completely differently.
Why these sizes for trout
Trout are the species where we shade lightest. Water clarity moves the right answer more than fish size does.
Sight feeders that inspect a bait before taking it. In clear water they refuse heavy line and oversized hooks that a bass would ignore completely.
Common mistakes
Too much hook for the bait
A single salmon egg or a small piece of worm on a #4 hook looks wrong to a trout. Size the hook to the bait, which usually means #12 to #8.
Heavy line in clear water
Ten pound mono on a stocked stream cuts your bites sharply. Four to six pound test is enough for the great majority of trout.
Setting the hook too hard
Trout have soft mouths and treble-hook spinners pull free easily. Lift into the fish rather than swinging.
