What size hook for crappie
Crappie hooks run #6 to #1, with #4 and #2 covering most situations. Minnows fish best on a #2 to #1 light-wire hook, and jig heads for crappie usually carry a #6 to #2 hook on a 1/32 to 1/16 oz head. Light wire matters more than size here because of how easily a crappie's mouth tears.

Sizes are ranges because hook numbering is not standardized. Two hooks stamped the same size in different styles or from different brands can differ noticeably in gap.
The hook styles in that table
Jig hook (leadhead)
A hook moulded into a weighted head. Hook size and head weight are chosen separately.
Sizing: Package weight in ounces tells you sink rate, not hook size. A 1/16 oz crappie head and a 1/2 oz bass jig can carry very different hooks.
Watch out: Pick the head weight for the depth and current you are actually fishing, then check that the hook matches the bait.
J hook
The general-purpose bait hook shape most people picture when they think of a fish hook. Straight or slightly offset point, moderate shank.
Sizing: Printed sizes are consistent within a model family but not across brands. Compare gap width, not the number.
Watch out: Because the point faces the shank, a J hook set late tends to catch deep. If you are fishing bait on a rod holder, a circle hook is the better tool.
Why these sizes for crappie
We shade crappie toward light wire and light line because the failure mode is tearing the hook out, not breaking off.
Schooling fish that feed upward, which is why a bait held slightly above them outproduces one below them. The bite is a light tap or simply weightlessness as the fish lifts the jig.
Common mistakes
Setting the hook hard
The nickname papermouth is literal. A hard swing tears the hook straight out. Lift and reel.
Heavy jig heads
A 1/4 oz head falls past suspended fish. Most crappie fishing is 1/32 to 1/16 oz.
Fishing below the school
Crappie feed up. If your electronics show fish at 12 feet, fish at 10.
