Where to find crappie

Brush piles, standing timber, docks and bridge pilings in lakes and reservoirs nationwide. They suspend at a specific depth and stay there, so finding the depth matters more than covering water.

How they feed

Schooling fish that feed upward, which is why a bait held slightly above them outproduces one below them. The bite is a light tap or simply weightlessness as the fish lifts the jig.

Typical size

Most crappie are 8 to 12 inches and under a pound. A 2 pound crappie is a notable fish in most of the country.

Through the year

Shallow in brush and around cover in spring to spawn, suspended over deeper structure in summer, back toward cover in fall, and tight to deep brush in winter.

Common crappie mistakes

Setting the hook hard

The nickname papermouth is literal. A hard swing tears the hook straight out. Lift and reel.

Heavy jig heads

A 1/4 oz head falls past suspended fish. Most crappie fishing is 1/32 to 1/16 oz.

Fishing below the school

Crappie feed up. If your electronics show fish at 12 feet, fish at 10.

Regulations

Many states set crappie length limits and daily bags per water body, and some reservoirs have their own rules. Check your state agency's current regulations.
